VNUHCM Announces Own Proficiency Test

On the morning of 19 April, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) held a press conference on admission information at VNUHCM in 2018. Accordingly, this is the first year for VNUHCM to organize a proficiency test as a method of enrollment.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoi Nghia – Vice President of VNUHCM, in addition to the usual method of enrollment, VNUHCM will organize more proficiency tests. The recruitment rate of the test results accounts for up to 20% of the total enrollment quota of VNUHCM member universities.

“Unlike the approach of the national high school examination, the proficiency test at VNUHCM focuses on assessing the candidate’s ability to study at university level including: logic, data processing, problem solving. These skills are assessed by a combined test of 120 multiple choice questions in 150 minutes “said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoi Nghia.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh – Director of VNUHCM-Center for Educational Testing and Quality Assessment said that the test of VNUHCM is based on the same approach to the U.S. Scholastic Assessment Test and the British Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). Specifically, these are standardized tests for university admission.

“The exams are aimed at testing the candidates’ abilities in reading, understanding, critical-thinking, analyzing, and problem solving rather than simply measuring their memory. In regards to the structure, VNUHCM proficiency tests comprehend the skills of reading comprehension and analysis as in SAT and the skill of problem solving as in TSA.” Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh said.

Assessing the significance of the proficiency test, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoi Nghia said that the exam is not only about the ability to select qualified candidates for its member universities, but also helps high school students to be better prepared for the learning process and participate effectively in the high quality labor market of the country.
At the same time, the successful organization of the proficiency test also helps to better define the role of VNUHCM in community service as well as realizing its “flaship” role in the university system in the South.
