New Solution For Saltwater Intrusion
The Saltwater Intrusion Automatic Alert System, which was researched and invented by VNUHCM-Institute of Nanotechnology (VNUHCM-INT), was introduced at the Workshop on Applying Nanotechnology in Agriculture (WANA 2016)  on December 20th, 2016.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Mau Chien – Director of VNUHCM-INT, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yusuke Shiratori – University of Kyushu (Japan), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Quyen – Vice Director of VNUHCM- Department of Science & Technology along with nearly 100 farmers in Ben Tre Province attended this workshop.
According to Dr. Doan Duc Chanh Tin (VNUHCM-INT), during the past year Ben Tre Province as well as Mekong Delta in general had suffered from severe damages caused by droughts and saltwater-intrusion. “Estimated loss in the drought and saltwater-intrusion season of 2015-2016 was 5.500 billion Vietnam Dong. VNUHCM associated with Ben Tre Province in implementing various solutions such as PVC water bags, RO saline water processing system… INT alone researched and successfully invented RO saline processing system … in order to strengthen the monitoring and supervision as well as enhance saline degree prediction capacity.
Dr. Tin supplemented that this system has many benefits such as collecting and submitting data of saline degree via SMS automatically , activating water pumps  through wireless access, activating solar cells constantly and it is far cheaper than foreign equipments.
At WANA 2016, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yusuke Shiratori presented the overview of the JICA Battery Cells Project. Specifically, this project is aimed at researching sewage processing in aquaculture, transforming to electricity through brand new solid battery cells, contributing to the sustainable development of Mekong Delta.
Nguyen Quoc Thinh, M.A – College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Can Tho University presented information of shrimp and catfish intensive farming in Soc Trang Province and Can Tho City as well as chemical ingredients used in fermentation to generate power the battery cells.
In the same afternoon, VNUHCM-INT launched the opening ceremony of Laboratory for presenting SATREPS, with experiment equipments sponsored by JICA at Hoang Vu Company, Ltd shrimp farms (Binh Thoi Commune, Binh Dai District).
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Mau Chien stated this was the result of more than 4 years of patnership between Japanese agents and VNUHCM-INT, VNUHCM-University of Technology and Can Tho University. He expected the related parties would have closer corporation with each other to successfully implement the project activities.
Mr. Nguyen Van Buoi – Vice Director of Ben Tre Province Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, stated that the project plays a vital role to local economic development. In the coming time, Ben Tre Province will apply and replicate this technology to support local agricultural development.
