President of Harvard University visits VNUHCM-University of Social Sciences and Humanities

On March 23, Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust, President of Harvard University, will meet with the President of VNUHCM and work with VNUHCM-University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNUHCM-USSH) on the potential and and priorities in cooperation.

After the meeting, Prof. Faust will give a lecture to the faculty and students at VNUHCM-USSH about the American Civil War with the theme “Aftermath: War, Memory and History”.

GS Drew Gilpin Faust is known as the author of multiple popular books. In 1996, her work, “the Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War”, was published by the North Carolina Press and won the Francis Parkman Award a year later.

Her latest work, “This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War” also won The Bancroft Prize in 2009, as well as a finalist of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, and one of the top 10 best books of 2008 nominated by The New York Times.

As a President, she expanded financial support, helped Harvard students, and promoted federal funding for scientific research, enhanced liberal education and promoted sustainable development and international cooperation.

The 28th President of Harvard University and the fifth female President of the Ivy League member, however Professor Drew Gilpin Faust has never studied in the world’s most prestigious unviersity.
She studied at Concord Institute, Massachusett. In 1968, she received an honorary degree in history from Bryn Mawr College. She then went on to receive her Master’s degree in 1971 and her Doctorate in 1975 at the University of Pennsylvania with a thesis on American civilization.

Prof Faust’s outstanding achievement of teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, earned her the awards in 1982 and 1996. In addition, she was elected to the American Historical Association in 1993, as well as the American Academy of Art and Sciences in 1994, the American Philosophical Society in 2004.

She was also a commissioner in various editorial and selection boards including the Pulitzer Prize History jury in 1986, 1990 and 2004. In 2014, She was voted by Forbes magazine as the 33rd most powerful woman in the world.

Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust will meet Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 26 before leaving Hanoi to visit other Asian countries.
