VNU-HCM’s Annual Conference 2008

On October 25, 2008, The Annual Conference 2008 was held in VNU-HCM. Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan – Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Ministry of Education and Training together with another Ministers and leaders of HCM City and Binh Duong Province.

This Conference, an opportunity for VNU-HCM itself to re-assess its operational results in the last academic year 2007-2008 and move forward for new orientation and mission in the next academic year 2008-2009.

After the initial settlement and foundation establishing period, the academic year 2007-2008, considered the first academic year of the period of 2007-2012 marking the most essential and decisive time when VNU-HCM begins its quality development, making its own status and structure.

With highly approval and agreement from the whole officials, lecturers and students, VNU-HCM is determined to innovation from educational activities, scientific researches, international relations to financial issues and basic construction in order to foster the forming of a modern campus urban and obtain proud achievements. VNU-HCM’s remarkable results in the academic year 2007-2008 are demonstrated in its structure affirmation, human resources intensifying, domestic-international status and prestigious boost, and the forming of VNU’s student model.

The focus and main theme set for the academic year 2008-2009 is “Standardization and Integration”. Prior orientations of this year are concretized on three spearheads with main specific goals as follows:

          The first one is about education, scientific research and international relations “Building educational environment in accordance with national and regional standards”.

          The second one is upgrading VNU-HCM’s facilities: “Infrastructure to meet educational demands”.

          The last is developing staff members: “Staff members become gradually professional and work in a sustainable developing organization”.

After the annual report, the conference divided into 3 symposia with 12 discussion groups at which members contributed not only many of their honest and strong opinions on the orientation and mission of the academic year 2008-2009 but also on issues concerning the construction, development, quality improvement, integration and reaching international standard of VNU-HCM.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thanh Binh, President of VNU-HCM, affirmatively said that VNU-HCM was extremely promoting its synergy in order to have more accomplishments in construction of VNU-HCM in many fields, those are education, scientific research, technology transferring, forming of modern campus urban in pursuant to the concern with environmental issues and supporting services. In the next few years, VNU-HCM will foster standardization in every activity, connect educational quality with social demands and gradually become worldwide integrated. In addition, VNU-HCM’s President emphasized that VNU-HCM will proceed investing projects in basic construction and attract investments in big projects – amongst which is the project on a modern and environmental friendly scientific park,…to affirm VNU-HCM itself a modern campus model in Vietnam and to reach the goal of becoming a prominent university in Southeast Asia and Asia.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, when monitoring the conference, congratulated VNU-HCM with its achievements in the academic year 2007-2008. He also highly appreciated VNU-HCM’s success in scientific research in which its achievements in the fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology are considered the most progressive and proudest in compare to those of other universities in Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan indicated that land clearance need to be completely solved so that VNU-HCM can soon become a green and modern campus to ensure good living conditions for teachers and students. In addition, he stated that recently because both educational information and university’ annual reports were not updated on the website, therefore, the world university ranking organizations had no criteria to carry out the ranking. Consequently, VNU-HCM as well as other domestic universities needs to disseminate information of training, research and educational quality through website as soon as possible.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan suggested that rectors could more raise the sense of initiative in appreciations of lecturers’ ability. From that, he could give good treatments and pay reasonable salary to them in order to attract well-qualified human force to school. That is the common trend in modern education.

On this occasion, on behalf of The Communist Party and the State, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Deputy of Prime Minister, awarded Second Ranked Independence Medal to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Chi Dao, the former Vice Minister of Ministry of Education and Training and former President of VNU-HCM.
